The Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Jerusalem 1000-1400: Every People Under Heaven" demonstrates the key role that the Holy City played in shaping the art of the period from 1000 to 1400, At this time, Jerusalem was home to many cultures and religions. Through times of peace as well as war, Jerusalem remained a constant source of inspiration that resulted in art of great beauty and fascinating complexity.

Jason Farago of the Wall Street Journal writes: "[The role of the city] weighs on everyone because Jerusalem is more than a place on the map: culturally it is the portal to heaven, perhaps even heaven itself. The real city and its internal image bleed into each other."

Rebecca Pollack is a 4th year PhD in Art History at the CUNY Graduate Center. She teaches Art History at Brooklyn College and Architectural History at City College. She studies 20th century memorials but has a deep love for medieval art, particularly Byzantine, pilgrim and Crusader art that engages with memory.
