Scholar-in-Residence / Seudah Shlishit with Dr. Yoel Finkelman

Saturday, July 8, 2023 19 Tammuz 5783

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Dr. Yoel Finkelman will be Darkhei Noam's next Shabbat Scholar-in-Residence and will address the community three times during Shabbat:

The Shabbat will focus on close readings of Talmudic stories, each of which revolves around interpersonal conflict in different contexts. We will focus on the characters in the stories, their motivations, their feelings, and how the Talmudic rabbis both acknowledged the inevitability of conflict and the difficulty in finding perfect solutions.

  • Kabbalat ShabbatThe Day Shmuel’s Teacher Made Him Cry: On Conflict between Students and Teachers – In this marvelous but short tale, the Talmud reflects on the best ways to address conflict between parents, teachers, and students. Suffice it to say, there are no simple solutions.
  • Before Musaf: On Egos and Public Policy: Two Mishnayot in Rosh Hashsnah – Sometimes, halakhah abounds in pluralism, multiple opinions, and a live-and-let-live attitude toward differences of opinion and practice. Sometimes, halakhah requires conformity and centralized authority. In those cases, is there any way to distinguish the policy questions from the personalities of the disputants?
  • At Seudah Shlishit (at SAJ- 15 West 86 Street): A Suicidal Princess, A Blind Rabbi, and A Murderous King: Bava Batra 3b – The Talmud reflects on King Herod’s rise to power, as those close to him try to manage his violent anger. How can subjects make the best out of a homicidal monarch?

We will gather at SAJ at 7 pm, daven mincha followed by seudah shlishit and Yoel Finkelman's talk, and conclude with maariv and havdalah.

Sponsored by Hannah Rothstein and Tzvi Borenstein in commemoration of the 20th Yahrzeit of Hannah's mother Molly Rothstein, z"l, Malka bat Chana v'Tuvia.
