Ta’anit Bechorot, the Fast of the Firstborn, falls on the day before Pesach, 14 Nisan. It commemorates the salvation of the firstborn children of Israel during Makkat Bechorot, the tenth plague in Egypt before the Exodus, in which the firstborn children of Egypt were killed by God. This year, since because the day before Pesach is Shabbatshabbat, Ta’anit Bechorot is pushed up to Thursday 4/10, the 12th of Nisan, in Ashkenazic communities. The general custom in Orthodox Ashkenazic communities is that firstborn males fast from sunrise until attending a siyyum held after morning Shacharit services with its accompanying seudat mitzvah/the special meal that accompanies a siyyum, the completion of learning a large block of Torah/Talmud text. -
