Musical Scholar-in-Residence: R. Deborah Sacks Mintz

Saturday, February 3, 2024 24 Shevat 5784

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM150 West 85th Street

We are thrilled to welcome Rabbi Deborah Sacks Mintz as our first musical scholar-in-residence. Rabbi Sacks Mintz will lead Kabbalat Shabbat, the Shabbat morning Torah service, speak before Musaf, and lead a musical workshop at a communal lunch.

Workshop at Communal Lunch:
Centering the Nigun: The Power of Wordless Song
When the limitations of words tether our prayers, wordless song offers a dive into that which is yet undiscovered. Through the meditative power of the nigun--wordless melody--we'll explore both the possibilities and boundaries of communal song.

Rabbi Deborah Sacks Mintz is Hadar's Director of Tefillah and Music. An educator, practitioner, and facilitator of Jewish communal prayer, Deborah supports individuals and communities - both within Hadar’s beit midrash and beyond - on their journeys into song and tefillah. As a musician, Deborah has partnered creatively with a diverse array of voices in the Jewish soundscape; she has collaborated on over two dozen albums with Rising Song Records and beyond, including her own 2020 debut record The Narrow and the Expanse, and the 2023 Yetzira.  Deborah received rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary, and holds degrees in vocal performance, religious anthropology, and women and gender studies.
